….doesn’t mean you didn’t write a good story!

On the author pages to which I belong on social media, I see comments from authors distraught that someone gave their writing a negative review. In a profound way, when I read these comments, it pains me.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account the blood, sweat and tears the author put into crafting their story.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account what drove the author to tell their story.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account that the author has a great deal of pride in the story which they told.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account that the author is a person with feelings and emotions.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take

into account the author is a person who may have taken strong inner grief, joy, anguish, love, or betrayal and put those gut wrenching emotions into a story to share with others.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account that the author is laying bare their very soul to the world to see.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account that the author bleeds from deep within their heart to tell their story.
When someone reviews a story, the odds are their review does not take into account that most authors do not write for fame, glory or riches – but simply because the author needs to write.
Never allow the negative review to stop you in your quest to tell your story.

When I got the first review on Amazon, it was negative, 1 star. A woman admitted that she read only the first chapter. This is the only negative review I got and after this, I got a bunch of 5-star reviews on Amazon and Goodreads page. Critics could be constructive and might push you forward. Also, negative reviews are sometimes written by people who are frustrated so they use us writers like a punching bag.

Ah, I sympathise. My first was three stars – and from the content of the review (short but somewhat damning), I was ‘lucky’ to get that.
It’s not wrong per se but it does seem mean when people give an indie book a low-star rating in cases where that book has few or no reviews; they must know that’s a hard position to recover from.

Perfectly said. Thank you. Writing is deeply personal and when someone criticizes our work we take it as an attack on us personally. We have to realize that we all have different tastes and not everyone is going to like our work. Some people are just assholes about it unfortunately but the way I look at those people is that they need to insult and shame people in order to hide their own shame and insecurities.
