Joe Leonardi’s “Damaged and Broken” series deals with pain and despair. In this, the third story, we meet a protagonist whose life has been marred by abuse, loss and pain. We follow him through several years, and the sense of cloying claustrophobia is so powerfully palpable that I literally found my own chest constricting. I felt immediate sympathy with the unnamed protagonist, and this is a testament to the author’s writing which, while minimalist, is bruisingly effective. It’s a heartbreaking read, difficult at times, but I thought that the protagonist’s emotional journey was beautifully captured and the story stayed with me even after I had read the final sentence.
Powerful, and recommended.

This is one of the most engaging books I have read in a long time. The descriptions are minimal, yet vivid. I kept holding out my plate for another serving, as I found it that compelling. I recommend this book for anyone, grappling with the demons of depression, or those affected by a friend or loved one’s suicide.

This work has leveraged my awe of Leonardi’s literary prowess.

Wonderfully written story on such a sensitive topic. As with all of his stories, you feel like you’re in the story.
